A priest of the Diocese of Kumba, Cameroon, Rev. Augustine Matute, has earned a PhD with a thesis that revisits the participation of the laity in the Munus Regendi (the Church's governing and leadership role) within the contemporary context of Synodality.
Defending his doctoral thesis at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome on June 1, 2026, Rev. Dr. Matute Augustine Ade-Motome traced the concept of Munus Regendi from the munera Christi (the gifts of Christ) through the munus Ecclesiae (the mission of the Church), clarifying the distinct interrelations between munus (office/duty), officium (official post), and potestas (power/authority).
While the Munus Regendi is traditionally reserved for bishops and clergy, Rev. Dr. Matute’s research featured a juridical analysis of Canons 129 and 288 to examine how the laity—while not invested with sacred authority—can participate in ecclesiastical governance by collaborating with those in Sacred Orders. Grounded in the dynamics of the Canonical Mission and Co-responsibility conferred by the Sacrament of Baptism, the study identifies primary avenues for this collaboration.
Using the Diocese of Kumba as a case study, the research proposes practical strategies to enhance lay involvement in church leadership. The findings suggest that encouraging lay cooperation can foster a deconcentration of power and promote good governance. Crucially, this research comes at a time when Pope Francis’ ongoing synod process is pushing dioceses worldwide to rethink structural participation.
After a brilliant presentation by Rev. Augustin, the jury rated his thesis “excellent and outstanding” and recommended it for full publication. Meanwhile, his previously announced book is set for launch in the coming days.
