BAKWERI YOUTH ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE WITH PETER ELINGE AS PRESIDENT
By Moki Stephen Mokondo in Buea for Fako News Centre
The most popular Fako youth group, BAYA, now has a new executive. The new executive with Mola Elinge Peter as President was elected into office on May 5, 2019, in Buea. Mola Elinge who hails from Bova I will be assisted by Emma Moname as Vice President, Liengu Hannah and Julie Epupa as Secretary and vice secretary respectively, Kofi Nancy as Financial Secretary, Limunga Frida as Treasurer, Smith Enyame and Aurelia Njomoas Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, Nguve John and Anny Lyombe as Public Relations Officers, and Sam Vefonge and Koffi Elias as Chief Whips.
Despite popular calls from members for the outgoing president, Mola Ngale Maenya to still run for elections, he resisted the temptation. Mola Maenya who has become very popular because of his innovativeness in running the affairs of the group during his mandate, told Fako News Cantre that he wants to show others that no one is indispensable. He noted that leaders are given a maximum of two mandates and he feels that after that period, opportunities should be giving to others to emerge as leaders.
Mola Meanya who won the…of the year said he is ready to lend his support to the new leadership headed by Mola Elinge Peter since he is still a member of the group.

Exactly 1year, 11 months and 15days ago, Wondongo Village in Buea hosted BAYA for the first time in a very special way! It is no surprise that after 717 days, the above mentioned village shall again give BAYA a historic hosting in her (BAYA) first hosting of the year 2018. Wondongo was the 2nd Village to host BAYA since the concept of “Hosting’ was born in this amazing group. “Hosting” in BAYA is a platform where BAYA members socialise culturally as they strive to promote and safeguard the Bakweri culture. It is on days like this that we have Traditional Gastronomy, traditional dances, traditional Historic facts and discussions on how to promote and safeguard the socio-cultural legacy of the Mokpe amongst the youths. BAYA calls on all the Bakweri youths around Wondongo (in particular) and Fako (in general) to join us in Wondongo come Sunday as we savour our beautiful cultural heritage in about 70 hours from now! o One of the Objectives of BAYA (Bakweri Youths Association) is to promote and safeguard the mokpe culture. Steps towards this entail educating ourselves on matters that concern our community. As a result, BAYA organised a debate on a very critical topic Mᴐnye MÒ Wakpe MÒ Jani Monamè (pronounced monameh) . In English, the topic for debate means Is the Bakweri Land a Blessing or a Curse?. The debate was coordinated by Mola Ngale Maenye (BAYA President) and had Mola Pastor Samuel Kinge, Iya Sophie & Mola Gobina as Judges… On the ‘’Side FOR the fact that it is a blessing’’, we had Iya Moname Ekema, Mola Ndive Mwambo and Mola Koffi Gobina. On the other side, we had Iya Enanga Vefonge, Mola Mbene Vefonge and Mola Njie Tome. It was attended by BAYA members.
Those claiming the Land is a curse (AGAINST) made the audience to understand that the land has instead brought enmity to Fako due to Land problems. Also, it has brought shame to the people as Our Chiefs are being dragged to court because of their indiscriminate sale of land. Moreover, the land has made the people lazy as most of the lands are cultivated by people from other regions. In addition, they went as far as saying that having riches and misusing them is as good as not having it at all.
The above points were contradicted by the panel ‘FOR” who made the audience to understand the land has brought blessings to the people as the land grows crops in abundance which not only feeds the Fako people but serves as a source of income. Again, to them the Fako land has brought pride to the people as the crude oil in Limbe serves the entire nation not to talk of the fact that it hosts the 2nd employer after the government (CDC Plantations). Moreover, they firmly stressed on the fact that the soil grows a lot of medicated plants which helps the Fako natives healthwise which they concluded by challenging that opponents against that Health is Wealth.
The most exciting part of the whole debate was the fact that it was done 90% in Mokpe and 10% in the English Language. The final score saw the Team FOR getting 75% and those AGAINST 60%.
Below are some highlight images of the Debate.
